New Project "The Road to Seven Springs"

Seven Springs, what a great name for a place and a set of photographs. Over the next three months I will shoot my travels to Seven Springs, Arizona and back. The location is a fairly isolated valley located in the fringing canyons of the Mongion Rim, just north of Scottsdale. The study is an observation of views of landscape and sky, views not often seen.

Identity has always been a difficult issue for me.

I literally had to pound my name into a wonderful old steel brush.
Kinda an interesting image. Certainly not soft and fuzzy.

CLOUDS AGAIN

I am a big fan of Joni Mitchell, always have been. Actually spoke to her once in a plumbing hardware store in Santa Monica California. She asked me if I new were the closest health food store was. Well I guess we have clouds in common. We are both observers of the sky. No matter how long you look or how hard you try to understand, you just cannot know clouds. Translate this into our perception of the world around us. The best we can do sometimes is simply to observe.

Ok, so clouds are majestic and the lighting is dramatic. Clouds are ever changing, never will this moment or shape or light ever occur again. Clouds are worth of our observation, certainly worthy of our artistic observation.

Desert Clouds

Clouds in the desert are some what rare. Most mornings we wake to clear blue sky with little chance of rain. This morning there were clouds.

Ohio need I say more

Work from Ohio.

When I was in collage I would drive the roads in rural Ohio and photograph
the human built land forms.

Fulton Creek Friends Church sign : "You can be too big for god to use but you can't be to small!"

What caught my eye about this sign was that the letters were not even. I could not figure if this was done on purpose. The message also intrigued me. If you think that you are small and you are small then god will still be their for you. And in fact the message really means that god prefers smallness over largeness. God it was a bleak winter in Ohio.

This is a work of art I created in college.
I was working with found images from news papers.
I would rephotograph the images and print them into larger prints.
The Russians were in Afghanistan. The images are from Pravda
and assembled on the front off the New York Times.
Just change the helmets and these could be US Soldiers.
Maybe in the end a soldier is a soldier, no matter the country he or she is from.
They will all in the end be trained to kill humans and wreak great havoc on the earth and
their fellow man. Of course this will be under the direction of great leadership.
I have always been shameful that as a race we are so conflict oriented.

I have also wondered were these soldiers ended up.

Telephone in a bathroom

What does it mean to have a telephone in your bathroom?

Well it means that you never want to be away from the phone.

It was a status symbol.

At least that was the way it was years ago.

Now the cell phone has replaced the phone in general as a status symbol.

The phone is with us all the time.

We are in reach and more importantly we are we are connected to information and
we are located in the world. Our phone is a map, connection, communicator, business tool, social tool, educator, our phone is no longer just a phone it is a tool, a key, a guide, it comforts us and connects us.

Ok, so when am I going to start showing the images that I shot.
The next post will begin the journey, for now I have to set the scene.

I am a six year old jewish kid who's family just moved into a nice home in the
suburbs. It was the end of the 60's and we were at war with North Vietnam.
My family spent the summers on the jersey shore in Margate and I was horribly afraid of the
ocean and bay. I had a fear of being eaten by sharks, do you blame me?

Walking the Visual Life

So if some one blogs in the woods can you hear it?

Of course this is an iteration of the old question about a Bear.
There are millions of blogs in the world and so I question when does a Blog have value?

I think value is derived from story, and stories are told by humans so this blog will be a story.
I hope it will become my story told with word and images, mostly but not limited to photos.

I have been photographing for what seems like a long time. My parents gave me a camera for my sixth birthday and ever since I have been snapping away. At a certain point a photographer becomes aware that they actually do have an ability to see the world a bit differently then
the non-visual.

It could be that it is a manic tendency to be receptive to external visual stimuli. I prefer to think it is a combination of sensitivity and artistic interpretation.

So here we go, just to prepare you I am going to start with some of my first images and move through the years to present day. It might take a bit of time to get to present time, yet I figure that this will support the effort, giving it structure.
